ARC East Midlands Theme Lead becomes NIHR Senior Investigator

Professor Adam Gordon has been appointed as a Senior Investigator by the NIHR.

Collectively, Senior Investigators constitute the NIHR College of Senior Investigators, and are members of the NIHR Academy. They help guide research capacity development and enhance the career paths of NIHR researchers, including participating as mentors in the NIHR mentoring programme.

Professor Gordon is the Theme Lead for Building Community Resilience and Enabling Independence, which undertakes research to support independent living, improved care for stroke survivors and coordinated multi-service care, particularly for older people.

He is a Professor of the Care of Older People at University of Nottingham, a Consultant Geriatrician at Royal Derby Hospital and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the British Geriatrics Society.

Professor Gordon said: “We’ve done a lot to build research capacity in care homes over the past decade and a half but we still have a long way to go. This recognition by the NIHR, and the opportunity that comes with it to influence the future direction of NIHR research, is an immense opportunity to further develop research that benefits the vulnerable people who live in, and are cared for, by care homes.”

Professor Gordon has been playing a crucial role in the CONDOR study, a £1.3 million national research programme to evaluate coronavirus tests in hospitals, general practices and care homes.

He is also leading the ARC East Midlands study COVID in Care Homes – Challenges and Dilemmas in Healthcare Delivery. In November 2020, Professor Adam Gordon was among a team of 11 who won the Nursing Times 2020 Award for Care of Older People at a virtual ceremony.

This round of appointments brings the College of NIHR Senior Investigators to 200 active members.

NIHR Senior Investigators are critical to augmenting the ongoing success of NIHR, and developing the health research capability fit for the challenges we must meet.

Full details of the 2022 NIHR Senior Investigator and Senior Investigator Emeritus appointments are available on the NIHR website. Full details of all NIHR Senior Investigators are available in the NIHR Senior Investigators Directory, which is updated in April each year.

The 16th annual round of the NIHR Senior Investigators Competition will be announced in summer 2022. Leading researchers funded by the NIHR (and who are employed by a NHS Trust, university or charity based in England) are encouraged to apply.
