Co-funded by the ARC East Midlands and the Stroke Association Postgraduate Fellowship at the University of Nottingham, Miriam’s research focused on the impact of early specialist orthotic assessment following a stroke.
Her findings highlight that the use of orthoses and input from orthotic specialists are essential in the stroke rehabilitation process. Early use of lower limb orthotics has been shown to improve walking speed, enhance balance and increase the ability to carry out daily activities in the critical weeks following a stroke.
Reflecting on her achievements, Miriam shared: "As an orthotist I am a proud member of one of the smallest clinical professional groups and I am so honoured to have been awarded my PhD in such an important area of healthcare working to improve the lives of those who have experienced a stroke."
Currently, Miriam is a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham based within the Division of Rehabilitation, Ageing and Wellbeing. Miriam also practices as a Senior Orthotist at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust.
