An event aiming to “bridge the gap” in health inequalities in research on multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs), and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is set to take place next month.
The free-to-attend symposium will highlight strategies for integrating under-represented groups in research on MLTCs and EDI. Researchers, industry representatives, commissioners, healthcare providers, and people involved in research are invited to attend.
Organised by the NIHR ARC East Midlands, the session will take place from 9.30am on Thursday, June 13, at the Big Shed Conferences in Leicester.
Chaired by Professor Kamlesh Khunti, Director of NIHR ARC East Midlands and the Real World Evidence Unit, the symposium will feature a keynote presentation by Professor Shaun Treweek, Chair of Health Services Research at the University of Aberdeen.
Professor Khunti, who is also a Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester, said: “Our aim is to pioneer a path toward equity in research on MLTC and EDI, closing the divide in health inequalities.
“Aiming to bridge the gap in health inequalities is essential as we want to create a level playing field, ensuring that every voice is heard, and every perspective valued.”
He added: “Through collaborative discussions and shared insights, we hope this event will ensure that under-represented groups are not only acknowledged but actively involved in shaping the landscape of research.”
The programme will include presentations showcasing exciting work across the NIHR ARCs, an inspiring poster session and interactive breakout sessions.
The event is part of the ‘Equality in Research Matters’ campaign, a project launched by ARC East Midlands – the lead ARC for research on MLTC and EDI of under-represented groups.
NIHR ARC East Midlands funds vital work to tackle the region’s health and care priorities by speeding up the adoption of research onto the frontline of health and social care. The organisation puts in place evidence-based innovations which seek to drive up standards of care and save time and money.
NIHR ARC East Midlands is hosted by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and works in collaboration with Health Innovation East Midlands. It has bases at the University of Leicester and the University of Nottingham.
