In partnership with the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, the NIHR ARC East Midlands is pleased to announce funding for two Masters in Research (MRes) studentships in “Medicine and Health”, starting in Autumn 2025.

Graduates receiving Masters degree

Funding details

  • Overview: The MRes is a one-year full-time (or two years part-time) programme that includes research training modules and a 35,000-word thesis
  • Financial support: University registration fees will be covered (estimated at around £5,006). A tax-free stipend for full-time students of £20,780 (to be confirmed). Part-time students will receive 50% of this stipend.

Available research topics

The studentships will be hosted by our workstream on:

  1. Mental Health and Wellbeing: Focused on the mental well-being of public service staff.
  2. Building Community Resilience and Enabling Independence: Research areas include ageing, frailty, falls, pre-hospital care, care homes and rehabilitation (e.g. post-stroke).

Applicants should propose a research area that aligns with one of the above workstreams and addresses the Department of Health and Social Care’s priorities, including moving care from ‘hospital to community’, ‘analogue to digital’, or ‘treatment to prevention’, as well as the CORE20+5 agenda.

Eligibility criteria

  • A minimum of a 2.1 honours degree at the undergraduate level is required.
  • Funding is available only for Home (UK) students. International students may apply but must demonstrate how they will cover the shortfall in funding for university registration fees.
