NIHR ARC East Midlands is pleased to be able to announce three funded internships to build capacity in dementia research.

We are looking for interested applicants to come and work with our ARC Dementia group, to develop your own research skills and help us develop and deliver research that matters to the community. 

Internship overview

  • Duration: Up to 2 days a week for 6 months, commencing April 2025.
  • Funding: Between £7,750 - £9,000 for the internship duration. This is the equivalent of £38,000 - £44,000 pro rata for full-time equivalent.
  • Eligibility: Open to pre-doctoral students, health and social care practitioners up to NHS Band 6 level (or equivalent), and members of the dementia community interested in getting involved in research.

Activities

Each internship offers a unique experience, but interns may engage in the following activities:

  • Literature review: Explore the current evidence base and undertake a review of the literature.
  • Qualitative research: Undertake qualitative data collection and analysis to gather insights.
  • Community engagement: Build research partnerships across community settings and undertake Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) activities to coproduce research and deliverables. 
  • Academic writing support: Assist in the preparation of academic writing outputs, contributing to knowledge dissemination.

Support and training

Interns will receive:

  • Personalised mentorship: Tailored guidance from dedicated Dem-Comm fellows who will serve as your project supervisors, ensuring you have the support you need throughout your internship.
  • Research group inclusion: Become part of our Dementia research group, led by experienced clinicians Professor Martin Orrell and Professor Richard Morriss, both of whom bring extensive experience in mental health services and research funding. 
  • Comprehensive training: Access to training on cultural competence and effective community engagement, and conducting equality impact assessments in research.
  • Professional development opportunities: Benefit from the support of our Academic Career Development Lead, helping you explore various avenues for academic and professional growth.
