People wanting to learn more about their health have been invited to an event taking place in Leicester in October.

Advice on healthy eating will be given as well as the opportunity to hear from leading experts and the chance to be tested for Type 2 diabetes at The Big Health Connect Event.

There will also be reflexology and holistic therapy, a children’s corner with a climbing wall and arts and crafts, while the event will also present an opportunity to celebrate older people’s experiences from the West Indian Senior Citizens Leicester Ageing Together Project.

The event will take place on Monday, October 16, between 9.30am and 5pm at Moat Community College, Maidstone Road, Leicester.

It is being supported by the Centre for BME Health East Midlands, which is working to reduce ethnic health inequality in the region by sharing resources and promoting research. The centre is part funded by NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands.

There will be no charge for admission and a free hot Caribbean lunch will be offered.

Speakers will cover subjects including prostate cancer, sickle cell and mental health and visitors can also browse a variety of stalls.

Organiser Pamela Campbell-Morris said: “It’s about bringing people together and promoting health, both in terms of knowledge, awareness and education. The event will also give us an opportunity to showcase what the centre is doing to reduce health inequalities in BME communities.”

As well the event being open to the general public, organisations can also register to have a stall but must do so by October 2.
