LiLaC: Embedding research in care homes

The Living Labs for Care (LiLaC) project explored how research can be embedded in care homes in ways that support everyday practice and improve the experiences of staff and residents. It also involved building research capacity and knowledge in care home staff.

Working with four care homes across the region, the project brought together staff, managers and researchers to share learning, conduct practice-led research and reflect on the challenges of doing research in care homes. The end of project event on March 27, 2026, celebrated what has been achieved

The resources below capture two different ways of sharing the project’s learning.

Voices from the nursing homes

The video below shares the experiences of two Nottinghamshire nursing homes involved in LiLaC, showing how the project worked in practice and what embedding research in care settings can look like day to day.

Creative reflection

The poem, written and performed by Leicester’s first poet laureate, Akshay Sharma, offers a creative reflection on the themes at the heart of the project: care, community, culture and creativity. It captures the human side of the work and the sense of shared purpose behind it.

Event discussions

The live scribed images, created by Nifty Fox, capture the discussions that took place at the end of project event, bringing together academic researchers, care home staff and managers to reflect on what works when conducting research in care settings.

Two versions are available: one capturing the perspectives of care staff, and one centred on the voices of residents. Together they surface shared themes including the challenge of time pressures, the importance of information sharing between care homes, and the need for fair recognition of staff involvement in research.
