Improving experiences of CAMHS inpatient care

A clear understanding of what to expect before, during, and after an inpatient admission to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) empowers young people and their families, helping to build confidence and reassurance.

Standardised information guide

The 'Knowing Where you are Going' guidance aims to improve the information available for young people, families, and clinicians about CAMHS inpatient units.

Developed with contributions from those with lived experience, it offers standardised messaging across units, covering preparation for admission, daily ward routines, visiting arrangements, and sources of further support.

This short animation provides a clear visual summary of the CAMHS inpatient admission process to help young people and families understand what to expect and feel supported through the transition.

Inpatient care checklist

The 'Far Away from Home' checklist supports inpatient teams in coordinating care for young people admitted far from home.

It highlights crucial steps such as referral confirmation, engaging the professional network, planning placements, managing visits and leave, and facilitating transfers to ensure smooth, continuous care.
