This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced social scientist to contribute to shaping applied health and care research at a regional level through independent peer review and strategic oversight.

About the Role

NIHR ARC East Midlands is seeking a Social Scientist to join its Scientific Committee. The successful applicant will be a mid-career researcher with approximately five to ten years of postdoctoral experience who wishes to gain further experience in peer reviewing research proposals and overseeing a research programme. Applicants should not currently hold a Chair-level position.

This is an unfunded role (travel expenses covered) with no change to your existing contractual status. Applicants will need the support of their line manager to apply.

Commitment and responsibilities

The Committee meets quarterly, usually in March, June, September and December. One meeting is held in person (full day), while the others are online (half day). Members are also expected to review materials in advance and may occasionally be asked to review additional applications electronically outside of scheduled meetings.

The appointment will commence in April 2026.

About the Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee (SC) provides assurance to the NIHR ARC EM Governance Board, Executive Board, wider NIHR, and our partners that funded projects are consistent with the ARC’s aims, are of high scientific quality, and are feasible

The Committee also monitors project progress, reviews general performance reports, and offers advice and support during the ARC’s annual review cycle.

An induction will be provided to introduce new members to ARC East Midlands’ work and portfolio of projects.
