Centred on the experiences of people living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), her research examined how long-term care could be enhanced by gaining a deeper understanding of unmet needs and identifying opportunities to improve current management strategies.
Working closely with a PPIE group and using a mixed-methods approach, the research brought together both patient and clinician perspectives, underlining the importance of diverse voices in shaping meaningful improvements in care and research.
Dr Playford’s findings suggest that adopting a more holistic, person‑centred approach to IBD care has the potential to improve patient satisfaction, strengthen engagement with treatment, and enhance overall quality of life.
Her research showed that unmet needs around mental health, diet, and coordinated multidisciplinary support significantly shape patients’ experiences and influence how effectively they can manage their condition.
Working with Crohn’s and Colitis UK, her research also highlighted that multidisciplinary teams would benefit through better integration of services, providing smoother and better-quality care to patients and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr Playford said: “The experience has been incredibly rewarding, albeit challenging at times.
“It has allowed me to develop as an independent researcher while contributing evidence to support improvements in the long-term care of people with inflammatory bowel disease.”
She added: “Through the support of my funder I had the opportunity to present my findings at international conferences and undertake training in areas such as cultural competency.
“These experiences have broadened my skills, strengthened my confidence as a researcher, and reinforced my commitment to improving health and care services through meaningful, patient-centred research.”
