As AI tools are increasingly used for transcription, data coding, and analysis, researchers must ensure that their use does not create barriers to participation or undermine trust among diverse communities.

Summary

This session will discuss some of the issues on how qualitative researchers can maintain research integrity when using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). 

We will also examine the key issues that qualitative researchers and mixed-methodologists should consider in this rapidly advancing field including:

  •  transparency about AI use, 
  • issues affecting informed consent, 
  • clarity over data processing and data security procedures, 
  • true confidentiality, and governance

Methodological considerations such as bias, and the imperative need for human oversight throughout the research process when GenAI will be used to assist the research team will also be discussed.
