Evidence summary BITE 26 – High intensity training for diabetes

Who needs to know?

People at high risk of type 2 diabetes, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

What is HIIT?

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves short bursts of “hard” exercise, interspersed with recovery periods. Effort intervals can be very short and very intense – like sprinting for 30 seconds, or at “threshold” where it feels hard but you are able to continue for 1-4 minutes. A typical workout takes 20-40 minutes in total, but requires just 3-16 minutes of exercise.
