Evidence summary BITE 15 – Treatment of personality disorder

Who needs to know?

People with personality disorders in secure forensic care.

What have we found?

  • In the 10 years after discharge from a medium secure forensic unit, personality disordered offenders who did not complete treatment incurred, on average, £144,130 more in costs to the NHS and criminal justice system than did treatment completers.

  • Improving treatment engagement could reduce the rate of non-completion, reduce costs, and improve outcomes.
