Evidence summary BITE 34 – Third sector support may increase older people’s resilience

Who needs to know?

Commissioners of health and social care services, third sector organisations providing services for older people, other professionals working to improve resilience of older people, older people themselves.

What have we found

• Resilience is multi-factorial, and can be defined as ‘bouncing back’ in the face of adversity

• Multiple, low level, psychosocial interventions may increase resilience in older people and therefore should be a priority to commissioners

• The third sector is well placed to provide these services, but increased ‘red tape’ makes it more difficult for organisations to secure and deliver contracts.
