Evidence summary BITE 17 – Pre-discharge home visit after stroke

Who needs to know?

People who have had a stroke and occupational therapists working in in-patient stroke care.

What have we found?

  • A survey conducted by the HOVIS team reported that the time spent on home visits varies between different stroke units.

  • Although the average was four hours of occupational therapy time per visit, there is limited evidence to show whether visits are clinically or cost effective.

  • Findings from the HOVIS feasibility study indicate that home visits may be cost effective for certain patient groups, but further research needs to focus on identifying those for whom they may

    be most effective.
